Understanding message notifications

You'll see an unread badge on the Messages link in the navigation bar whenever you have unread conversations, and (depending on your notification settings) you may also receive email or in-app notifications for new messages.

Manage which notifications you receive from Settings > Notifications — you can turn email or messenger-style notifications on or off independently of in-app notifications.
